What is the path for safety and thus growth? The truth.
It is well established; from clinical disciplines, the Bible's doctrines to Buddha's Eightfold Path, knowing the truth and speaking the truth (including one's subjective truth) is the crucial #1 practice for enlightenment, health, and wellbeing.

THE WORLD'S LEADING MEDITATION RESEARCHER
We must know the harmful side effects of mindfulness in order to properly prescribe it.
A recent review of nearly 7,000 studies of meditation practices found that less than 1% of them measured adverse effects. Dr. Willoughby Britton, the world's leading meditation researcher, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior, renowned neuroscientist at Brown University, said that this is largely because assessing adverse effects (a process known as “harms monitoring”) in non-pharmacological treatments like mindfulness-based meditation programs is difficult to do well.
Does Mindfulness Worsen Sleep?
See the truth from the 1st objective study on mindfulness and sleep..., from the world's leading meditation researcher; Prof. Willoughby Britton, PhD, Neuroscientist, Psychologist

A comprehensive cross-sectional study on the effects of solo meditation reported that nearly 70% of individuals had at least one negative effect, which varied from increased anxiety to depression and full-blown psychosis. These then cascaded to other harmful symptoms.
Why mindfulness is not for those who have suffered trauma?
Prior to Covid, the CDC reported, 7 in 10 has incurred trauma. Post-Covid, trauma has now basically reached 10 in 10. So what do the world's top trauma experts, including the leading meditation teachers say of using mindfulness and solo meditation to treat trauma?

World-renowned trauma pioneer, Prof. Bessel van der Kolk shares his warning

PABLO DAS, RENOWNED TRAUMA EXPERT, MEDITATION TEACHER
The foundation of trauma treatment is DO NO HARM, and this starts with full disclosure of any adverse effects from a prescribed treatment. Yet, this #1 rule is conveniently left out of mindfulness prescriptions. This has caused much harm to innocent people.

THE WORLD'S LEADING MEDITATION RESEARCHER
Mindfulness have been repeatedly found to be associated with worse mental health, including increased depression, anxiety, bad sleep and other mental dysfunctions.

Why many are practicing lies of omission and suppressing the whole truth regarding mindfulness?
Until recently (2021), most research had turned a blind eye to the potential adverse effects and possible risks of mindfulness-meditation practices. Why?

As revealed by ordained Zen Buddhist Teachers like Professor of Business Management at San Fransisco State University, Dr. Ronald Purser, author of the best-selling book, McMindfulness, "Many individuals touting mindfulness don't really practice it but use it as virtual signaling. Many who tout mindfulness are in the entertainment industry which the masses follow; but is Hollywood really synonymous with good mental health. Not. Corporations want to virtue signal too and also blame all their internal problems on employees who don't meditate — which is about 95% of people. Touting mindfulness is an effort to silence employees." says, Professor Purser.
He continues, "The industry has mushroomed into a $2 Billion a year market based mostly on fake science and the hi-jacking of Buddha's Eightfold Path."
Is "Mindfulness" Counterfeit Buddhism?
World-renowned Yogic Master, Sanghuru, laughs at American mindfulness, he says, "Seems like they have confused the mango for the tree."

Why do Zen Buddhist teachers and true meditation masters laugh and frown on American mindfulness?
Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, said, "Half-truths are complete lies." See below Buddha's Eightfold Path, read clockwise:

Note three facts:
a. The word "Right" in front of each behavior/outcome. Does one word make all the difference? Do you want income, or the right income? Do you want a place to live, or the right place to live. Do you want a car, or the right car. Do you want a partner/spouse, or the right partner/spouse. Do you want a life, or the right life. It makes all the difference when we omit "Right." So like Master Hanh says, "Half-truths are complete lies." Thus is the half-truth of American mindfulness, a lie.
b. The Right Mindfulness + self-care is an oxymoron. In particular, The Right Mindfulness is grounded in the Buddhist doctrine of anattā, or the ‘no-self’. Anattā is a metaphysical denial of the self, defending the idea that there is nothing like a soul, spirit or any ongoing individual basis for identity. The outcome of having no ego, no self for selfish intentions.
Ultimately, the point of Buddha's Eightfold Path is achieving selflessness and a full desire to serve humanity. The latter goal contradicts the idea of self-care and self-love (which is toxic and Narcissistic) that is popular in Western cultures.
c. Buddha's Eightfold Path is a build-up from the foundational most important behaviors to the least/last important to attain enlightenment, etc. What is the foundation? 1. Knowing the absolute truth ("Right View"). 2. Desiring love and compassion for all ("Right Intention"). 3. Speaking the truth with kindness, never speaking wrong of anyone ("Right Speech"). What position is the "Right Mindfulness" at? 8th, last. Why?
Because the "Right Mindfulness" emerges when one practices 1 through 7 steps. The Right Mindfulness is the mango/fruit, while steps 1 through 7 are the soil, root, and tree. In Buddha's teachings, The Right Mindfulness is an outcome, not a practice made up in America by a caucasian, Jon Kabat-Zinn. It's no wonder nearly 70% of people suffer unwanted negative outcomes from mindfulness.
So there is no "mindfulness" in the Buddhist doctrines. American mindfulness breaks and bypasses the most important practices for enlightenment, etc. American mindfulness is complete opposite of Buddha's Right Mindfulness.
THICH NHAT HANH, ZEN MASTER MONK
People practicing [solo] meditation for self and selfish reasons, are then experiencing a mere pale shadow of [the right] mindfulness.
But what about all the media touting American mindfulness as "scientifically proven and evidence-based"?
Most people do very little homework on the pills and practices we consume. We prefer quick fixes and insta-wellness. Research shows, many don't know how to discern real science from pseudoscience.
Unfortunately, if they were more scientifically literate, they would know that "scientifically proven and evidenced-based" are mere marketing buzz words that are usually used by people/companies that lack truly strong scientific support.
So the mental laziness of the masses greases the path for all sorts of myths to slip into the masses' minds; so is the case for mindfulness as more as more studies now show.
LAMA JAMPA THAYE, MASTER MEDITATION TEACHER
Seems to me, Western mindfulness has been deceptively marketed as Buddhism and is just an attention-based practice, at best. And at worst, is a license for people to just daydream and corporations to silence people's voices.
The height of enlightenment is knowing, practicing and speaking the truth (aka "Absolute Reality"). Thus if one wishes to be on the path of enlightenment; one ought to know the difference between American mindfulness vs. The Right Mindfulness of Buddhist philosophy. Then decide if one wants the very different outcomes from these two very different paths.
So cheers to you for every PUUR you do! You're not only practicing being the authentic you which connects and beautifully melds your body, brain, mind; you're also doing an authentic practice based on timeless legacy of which the most modern of these ancients is Rinzai Zen Koans.
